SHARE Asexuality poses a challenge to some of our most fundamental beliefs about humans and their feelings. Yet, on this topic, we are mostly ignoramuses. Many Americans regard the prevailing assumptions about sex and sexuality as universal. They don’t appreciate the ways that these ideas have changed over the course of history. Even within the scientific community, the study of asexuality as an orientation is starkly underdeveloped. Recently, I asked for suggestions for updates for the 40th anniversary edition of that classic book, Our Bodies, Ourselves. Kris suggested a new section on asexuality, and pointed readers to asexuality.
Feminism to me and to any real, non-extremist feminist is not about entitlement or de-throning or emasculating men. In my opinion, it would make more sense to equate entitlement with women NOT trying to improve themselves and expecting a man to provide for them just because they have a pretty face and make good pies. It just seems like flawed logic. I am self employed, quite successful and provide for myself.
To be any other way would make me a burden to society and a drain on the resources and finances of others. I submit in certain ways because I want him to be a man.

This post is inspired by this question posed by aqua-ace as well as some recent discussions follow-ups partly captured here , but there seem to be too many different threads to easily reblog or link to here about sex-averse and sex-favorable asexuals. So I decided to limit the blogs I follow on Tumblr to those which primarily provide content related to asexuality that is of interest to me. When it comes to other topics of importance to me, I prefer other formats and forums primarily Twitter for online interaction.
Another thing I had come to realize even before this is that the subset of asexual blogs I follow is not necessarily representative of the asexual community on Tumblr as a whole. This again is because I primarily follow what interests and benefits me in navigating my asexuality. It does matter to me if the asexual community however defined is acting in ways that are harmful to some of its members, or to other groups of people.
However, I have neither the time nor the motivation to follow asexuality-related tags looking for such instances or to otherwise seek them out beyond what I come across via the blogs I regularly read on Tumblr or otherwise. I also realize that by limiting my Tumblr follow list to blogs that primarily post asexuality-related content, I may be missing important discussions on blogs that usually post on other topics.
I ultimately found that it was not sustainable for me, given my other commitments both online and offline, to spend so much time sifting through content that is not directly related. I have a lot of respect for those who are able to devote significant time to doing so. According to many of these discussions and narratives, I seem to be somewhat unassailable as an asexual.
I barely even experience aesthetic attraction. On pretty much every measure, I seem to be almost completely non-sexual.

Several gothic commentators pointed out that IKEA had managed to offend a group who actually like a lot of their products and were unhappy with IKEA perpetuating negative stereotypes of goths. Some of the Meth Project ads, which pointedly use frightening, extreme imagery to make their point, have a noted tendency to have some of the more problematic ads imply that meth addiction causes middle-class kids to become homeless and straight kids to turn gay, and that linking these things are designed to attach the shame and stigma of being gay or poor to being a meth addict.
The reality is that impoverished people and homosexuals already are the groups with the highest risk of meth addiction, particularly in the northern and midwestern United States. Supporters have pointed out that the poor and gay characters in the ads are depicting a realistic example, and it’s only the audience who assumes that they weren’t poor or gay to begin with, but most of them depict at least upper-middle-class teenagers, often girls, from good families, and the ads that reference male homosexuality depict it as predatory and abusive.
In , Israel’s Ministry of Immigrant Absorption released a series of ads targeting Israeli expatriates in America to encourage them to return home. They depicted Jewish Americans as ignorant of Jewish history and culture, while their patient and intelligent Israeli partners or family members struggled in vain to educate them. The ads seemed to imply that Israeli Jews are the only “real” Jews, that the world outside Israel is a godless wasteland, and that American or secular Jews or Americans of any type, for that matter are dumb and will lead Israelis astray.
Needless to say, many Jewish Americans found this deeply insulting and the ads were pulled. In the mid-nineties, Reebok came under fire for producing a shoe called the Incubus — a shoe marketed to women, no less. Apparently, someone in marketing submitted it as a potential name because it was a non-trademarked word that sounded cool , and the company didn’t do the research that would have revealed that they were about to sell a women’s athletic shoe named after male Horny Devils.
The company quickly apologized and recalled the product when this came to their attention. The “Add a Kid” line of kids’ clothing attracted some controversy: In order to illustrate this, the shirts had cardboard cutouts that had photos of kids printed on them while in stores.
Edit Although researchers in human sexuality have known about the existence of asexuality since at least the late s, little research has been done. Most of what has been done has been recent. Alfred Kinsey was aware of an asexual element in the population but did not pursue the topic. The Kinsey scale of sexual orientation ranged from 0 completely heterosexual to 6 completely homosexual , and Kinsey employed a separate category of X for those with “no socio-sexual contacts or reactions”.

Asexuality is the lack of sexual attraction to others, or low or absent interest in or desire for sexual activity. It may be considered the lack of a sexual orientation, or one of the variations thereof, alongside heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality. It may also be categorized more widely to include a broad spectrum of asexual sub-identities.
Romantic orientation Asexuality is sometimes referred to as ace or the ace community by researchers or asexuals. If at any point someone finds the word asexual useful to describe themselves, we encourage them to use it for as long as it makes sense to do so. These other identities include, but are not limited to, how they define their gender and their romantic orientation.
Regarding romantic or emotional aspects of sexual orientation or sexual identity , for example, asexuals may identify as heterosexual , lesbian , gay , bisexual , queer , or by the following terms to indicate that they associate with the romantic, rather than sexual, aspects of sexual orientation: While the term gray-A may cover anyone who occasionally feels romantic or sexual attraction, demisexuals or semisexuals experience sexual attraction only as a secondary component, feeling sexual attraction once a reasonably stable or large emotional connection has been created.
One term coined by individuals in the asexual community is friend-focused, which refers to highly valued, non-romantic relationships. Other terms include squishes and zucchinis, which are non-romantic crushes and queer-platonic relationships, respectively. Terms such as non-asexual and allosexual are used to refer to individuals on the opposite side of the sexuality spectrum. The original scale included a designation of “X”, indicating a lack of sexual behavior.

But even as we speak up for women and applaud the efforts of modern-day feminists, we still have to admit that the feminist movement is no where near perfect. Yes, we can say that there are some things really wrong with feminism right now and still be feminists. Judging from the comments and emails we get, I know a lot of you guys feel the same way. Here are 12 things that are wrong with feminism right now that we all need to keep in mind: I identify as feminist, but I don’t identify as a feminist, i.
I believe in the equality of the sexes and I oppose gender discrimination but I won’t hang the tag of A Feminist on myself because that seems to me to be announcing to the world that I agree with all of what modern feminism says, which I don’t.
